The General Skilled Migration programme, is for skilled workers who have certain expertise and skills which are needed in Australia. To qualify for this visa, applicants must be:

·         over 18 and under 50 years of age

·         have good written, listening and spoken English language skills,

·         and, recent skilled work experience or must have recently completed eligible Australian qualification

·         have a successful skill assessment with the requisite assessment authority in Australia.

Applicant’s skills must be on the Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Applicant would have to apply for skill assessment to ascertain whether their skills meet the standards in Australia. The assessment is done by an established assessment body in Australia.

There are various visa options under the General Skilled Migration programme for skilled workers who want to migrate or continue to reside in Australia but do not have an employer to sponsor them. They can either apply as independent skilled migrants and or be sponsored by a relative, or by a nominating participating State or Territory government.

Independent
This visa option allows individual with certain expertise and skills to migrate permanently to Australia with member/s of their immediate family. There are no restrictions on this visa. Migrants on this visa are free to migrate to any state or territory in Australia. Migrants are also free to work for any employer of their choice in any Australian state or territory. Sponsored
This visa option allows migrants with certain skills and expertise in certain occupations who are sponsored by either an eligible relative or sponsorship participating state or territory, to migrate with members of their immediate family to Australia on a permanent visa. Migrants on this visa are restricted to live and work in certain states or territories for at least 2 years.

This visa permits people with certain skills to migrate permanently to with members of their immediate family. Apart from having the requisite skills applicants must demonstrate they have competent English    (must have a minimum band of 6 in the IELTS test). They must be between the ages of 18 and 45 years.

Processing time for this visa depend on applicant’s occupation. It takes between 6 to 2years for application to be processed.

The visa allows the main applicant and any member of his immediate family included in the application to reside in Australia permanently.

This visa allows applicants with certain skills to be sponsored by a State or territory in Australia to permanently live and work in Australia. Applicants would need to demonstrate they have competent English and a successful skill assessment before they can be granted the sponsorship to apply for the visa.

The following are the standard requirements for this visa:
• over 18 and under 50 years of age
• have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an   occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)
• you have a nomination from a participating State or Territory government agency.

This Visa is a three year provisional visa for skilled workers who can not obtain the point required for Skilled - Independent visa. This visa is a pathway to permanent residence. Applicants can be able to apply for permanent residence provided they reside in certain regional areas for two years and work there for at least a year.
Applicants and members of their immediate family would have to abide by the residence requirement to qualify for permanent residence.

The definition of Specified Regional Area depends on whether you are being sponsored by an eligible relative or nominated by a State or Territory government.
You maybe eligible for this visa if you are:

    • outside Australia
       or
    • a New Zealand citizen who holds a Special Category visa (subclass 444)
       and you must:
    • be over 18 and under 50 years of age
    • have competent English language skills
    • have the skills and qualifications that meets the Australian standard for an occupation on the     

        Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

The SOL is a list of skilled occupations that are in need in Australia.
State Skilled Sponsored - Regional visa will:
    • allows you to remain in Australia for up to three (3) years and requires you to live in a Specified   

       Regional Area in Australia for 2 years and work there for at least a year.
    • allows accompanying secondary applicants to work and study, but only in a Specified Regional    

        Area of Australia
    • provides a pathway to permanent residence.

EMPLOYER SPONSORED WORK VISA

Temporary Business (Long Stay) - Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457)
This program  allows Australia Employers to sponsor their employees or prospective employees with certain skills to Australia on a temporary visa. Sponsored employees are obliged to work for their sponsor during the sponsorship period. This is a pathway to permanent residence. Employees can be sponsored by their employers for a permanent visa after two years of working for their sponsor.

Employers can be either:

    • Australian businesses
    • overseas businesses.

Employer can employ overseas workers for a period of between three (3) months and four (4) years. As an Employee of this subclass of visa you can:

    • work in Australia for a period of between three (3) months and four (4) years
    • migrate to Australia with member of their immediate family
    • after entering Australia, there is no limit on the number of times they can travel in and out of   

       Australia.

Employer Obligations to Overseas Employee:

There are a number of obligations that employers are required to meet. These obligations apply to applications lodged on or after 1 July 2004.
Must be responsible for costs such as:
    • ensure that the cost of return travel for an employee (and accompanying family member) is met    

        to return them to their home country

    • pay all medical or hospital expenses for an employee (and accompanying family member) for

       treatment in a public hospital (other than expenses that are met by health insurance or

       reciprocal health care arrangements) - this undertaking continues until all expenses are paid


    • repay the Australian Government for money it spends as a result of the employee's stay in

The Employer Nomination Scheme permits Australian employers to sponsor people with certain skills which are needed in Australia to migrate and work in Australia on a permanent visa.
